About Salt Spring Wood Co.

Salt Spring Wood Co is a Gulf Island-based design studio that handcrafts heirloom quality custom furniture from old-growth reclaimed wood, salvaged live edge slabs and hand-welded steel.

We are most passionate about creating a living monument and gathering place for families and friends to share stories and create memories.

The concept behind Salt Spring Wood Co?

My name is Ryan Quirico and I live on Salt Spring Island, British Columbia, Canada.

Waking up each morning grateful to be building and designing functional pieces of art has been my dream since high school. My inspiration and creative flow comes from the sights, sounds and smells of Mother Nature here on the West Coast. I’m a certified tradesperson with thousands of hours creating Functional Art. It’s the thrill of finding the right piece(s) of wood and balancing their beauty with the legs and frames which they attach to. This can take a considerable amount of time and effort, but believe me it’s well worth it!

What Sets Us Apart

Salt Spring Wood Co Sign

We are located on a 24 acre farm with an 80’ x 40’ barn that houses our studio and workshop. Inside the barn you will find countless pieces reclaimed and salvaged wood pieces including Big Leaf Maple, Garry Oak and Douglas Fir. We also have a variety of Walnut and Arbutus. Most of these species of wood are native to the West Coast and Salt Spring Island. We also have a full Metal Fabrication Studio where our frames and legs are handmade with the utmost attention to detail. Both the studio and workshop are open to the public. We kindly ask that you please call to make an appointment before visiting.

After seeing how amazing Ryan’s work was at a friends place on the island. I was thrilled to go see more of his wood collection and pieces and how much he loves what he’s doing.

Love my new table! Seats 8, and completes the space perfectly. Ryan is a pleasure to work with. Thank you!

We were able to choose the slab of wood, the design of the custom welded legs as well as the finish. Everyone who comes into our house is blown away! We recently renovated our kitchen and the table really completed our space!

We have a strong environmental commitment to use locally sourced salvaged and reclaimed wood.

By using salvage wood, we are maintaining a small carbon footprint. And at the same time taking the opportunity to capture the beauty of old trees, preserving them forever in the heirloom pieces we create. These pieces are full of history, and the enormous single slab or book-matched tables that we create are living monuments to their previous grandeur.

About Ryan

Growing up in Edmonton, A.B. I was always fabricating with wood and metal. I built outdoor showers, benches, tables and cook houses with my brother and father as a teenager. Eventually, I began making custom pieces for vehicles, metal CD racks for my friends, even tree houses in Edmontons river valley.

After spending sixteen years welding and working alongside tradespeople from all around the world, I took a step back from my career and moved to the West Coast. I moved to a four hundred square foot, oddly shaped studio apartment in Vancouver, BC, which inspired me to start creating furniture to fit it's unique space.

These pieces were the true definition of "custom" because they were what made the space just work. Not long after my move, I opened my own artist's studio in Vancouver's Chinatown called Studio 126.

Later on, deciding to leave my city life behind, I moved to the forested, seaside community of Salt Spring Island, BC, which became the namesake of my current studio and business: Salt Spring Wood Co. Our workshop is now a 40' x 80' barn on a twenty four acre farm. Designing and fabricating custom furniture is fun, exciting, challenging and rewarding. I feel there is no greater life than one where you can create every day.

Ryan is a person with high character, strong work ethic and integrity. Since meeting him he has always been someone I can look up to.
